2013 Community Garden Calendar/Timeline

Although we are beginning the 2014 Community Garden Season, I am posting LAST YEAR'S calendar of when we planted, transplanted, fertilized, harvested, etc. as a "guide" to help us in this year's garden...and more importantly, as a record of the 2013 community garden:

2013 BLESSED COMMUNITY GARDEN

SEASON CALENDAR

• 16 March 2013:  Cody prepared the main garden plot (disc).
• 17 March 2013:  Started by seed two flats of sweet peppers (California Wonder) and two flats of tomatoes (1 beefsteak and 1 Abe Lincoln)
• 19 March 2013:  Started by seed 1/2 flat of Sun Gold Cherry Tomatoes, 1/2 flat Italian Romas, as well as hot peppers (5-10 each): Poblanos, Banana Peppers, Anaheims, Cayenne, and Jalapenos.
• 21 March 2013:  Started by seed 6 early purple sprouting Broccoli, 6 Spring Broccoli (from the Ark), 6 Early Jersey Cabbage, 12 Tete Noire Cabbage, 5 Emerald Artichoke, 6 Purple of Sicily Cauliflower, 5 Omaha-Caleb Pumpkins, and 6 Pie Pumpkins.
• 26 March 2013:  Started from seed 1 flat marigolds.
• 30 March 2013:  Planted in main garden -- 1000 onions (yellow and white), 4 long rows peas.
• 2 April 2013:   Transplanted first flat of beefsteak tomatoes (122) into interim growing containers and transplanted experimental pumpkins (seeded 21 March)
• 6 April 2013:  Put manure on Wheatley and Pace gardens.
• 7 April 2013:  Transplanted into interim growing containers: Cauliflower (Purple of Sicily, 6; and Snowball, 6); Broccoli (Spring Broccoli, 6; and Early Purple, 6); Cabbage (Early Jersey, 12; and Tete Noire, 24); Artichoke (Emerald, 1).
  
• 9 April 2013: Transplanted full flats of Abe Lincoln Beefsteaks into interim growing containers.
• 13 April 2013: Transplanted Italian Romas (63), 1 artichoke, Sun Gold Cherry Tomatoes (65); Started by seed: 4 artichoke, 30 basil and 10 kale.
• 14 April 2013: Started by seed: Italian Parsley (30) and Rosemary (10).
• 16 April 2013:  Transplanted into interim growing containers: 1 flat sweet peppers, all the Jalapeno and Anaheim peppers.
• 19 April 2013: 1st day in greenhouse.
• 20 April 2013: Planted at Packs' garden plot: 7 rows taters (Yukons, Russets, Reds).
• 21 April 2013: Placed tomatoes in greenhouse (for day only/after church until about 10 p.m.).
• 23 April 2013:  Planted at main garden: 2 rows of Napa Cabbages (50), 1 row onions (160), Purple Cabbage (8-12), Kale (12), Brussel Sprouts (12), Broccoli (6).
• 27 April 2013: Transplanted into main garden: Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage; Left all peppers and tomatoes on deck all day and overnight.
• 30 April 2013:  Weeded peas and onions and fertilized Grandpa Bill's garden.
• 4 May 2013:  Replanted carrots
  
  and beets, weeded onions, planted 60 more onions, more fertilizer on Grandpa Bills' garden, watered all baby transplants.
• 7 May 2013:  Transplanted into Wheatley garden plot 40 Beefsteak Tomatoes; planted garlic in planter box / Wheatley garden (side note: never came up); Planted zinnias by seed (last year's seed that was harvested) into Wheatley garden; Planted 70+ watermelon in peat pots (1/2 white, 1/2 regular), and planted about 25 cantaloupe, about 25 honeydew melons, and about 15 eggplant seeds into peat pots.
• 11 May 2013: Transplanted 150 beefsteak tomatoes in main garden as well as 10 cherry tomatoes and 40 romas in main garden.  Also, planted by seed zinnias in main garden.
• 14 May 2013:  Transplanted 160 sweet peppers, 1 row jalapenos, cayenne, bananas and anaheims into Wheatley garden.  Planted three rows of popcorn and two rows of Indian corn.
• 18 May 2013:  Weeded and watered / main garden.
  
• 21 May 2013:  Planted 1st 7 rows of corn at Pack garden plot; planted two more rows/beans in main garden; planted tomatillos (purchased 3); planted a few eggplants (purchased 11); planted all squash and cukes: 8 straight hills, 8 hills, 2 sw slice cuke hills; 10 hills of butternut squash; 10 hills of spaghetti squash; 10 bills of black beauty zucchinis; 4 hills of crook neck squash; 5 hills of yellow zucchinis; 10 hills of banana squash; 4 hills sweet meat; 2 hills of acorn squash; and 2 hills Hubbards.
• 25 May 2013: Pulled back berm weeds at Wheatley back fence line in prep for pumpkin planting; weeded entire Wheatley garden; washed all garden containers for storage for next year; hauled weeds to dump in Wheatley truck.
• 28 May 2013:  Huge rainstorm -- NO GARDEN WORK.
• 1 June 2013: Planted 7 more rows of corn; started seeds inside for fall broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage (30 each); Planted rest of beans (total of 7 rows of slenderettes and 1/2 row purple ones); prepped ground at Pace garden and put black plastic down for watermelon planting on 4th of June.
• 4 June 2013: Planted watermelon (2 kinds), cantaloupe, and honeydew melons at Pace garden (on top of black plastic).
• 8 June 2013: Planted 6 rows/corn at main garden; 13 hills of pumpkins at Wheatley garden.
• 14 June 2013: Planted 6 rows of corn in main garden.
• 5 July 2013:  Cody and Kim planted four rows of corn in the main garden (last planting -- side note: planted too late and didn't mature).
• 9 July 2013: Tomatoes weeded and started to work on filling baskets.  Some green beans ready. Potatoes were ready.  3 families got cherry tomatoes; weeded corn for 30 minutes at end of shift. Lots of weeds!
