2012 GARDEN:
Beginning of March – fertilizer on two pieces of 1100 west
garden; 2 bags
March 26th – planted 4-1/2 rows of peas and 500 onions
March 31st –
planted broccoli and lettuce inside
First week of April –
planted tomatoes and peppers by seed at Thanksgiving Point
April 10 – cabbages and broccoli planted outdoors; planted
by seed first week of March; peas are up and a beautiful crop
April 17th – transplanted seedlings at
Thanksgiving point (tomatoes and peppers)
April 24th – picked up flat of peppers and
brought home from Thanksgiving Point to transplant
April 25 – planted two rows of carrots, beets, turnips,
marigolds, 2 rows beans
April 27th – Community Garden mini-class on
planting lettuce from seed
May 4th – picked up corn seed from Chirine
May 12th – planted first crop of corn (6 rows)
May 14th – Planted 4 rows of tomatoes and against
fences; also 2 more beans; carrots still not coming up and will need to replant
May 18th – replanted carrots; planted zinnias and
4 rows of beans; hard, hard rain today
May 19th – planted all sweet and some hot peppers
in main garden and prepared ground, laid down tarps and planted watermelons in
Wheatley garden (1 bag of fertilizer before planting)
May 24th – planted second crop of corn (6
rows).
May 26th – planted zucchini, squash and cucumbers
May 28th – planted tomatillos and eggplant
May 31st – handful of peas picked to see if they
are ready – almost; carrots starting to come up a little better; all bean rows
up and first two are filling in nicely; zinnias are all up and looking good;
beets thinned and look good; Heirloom tomatoes are ready for stakes.
Week of June 5th – Peas harvested (mostly snow
peas for stir fry, a few sugarsnap)
Week of June 7th – planted cantaloupes (frost
damage in some areas of our neighborhood)
June 10th – HUGE WIND STORM; tore black tarp off
of half of the watermelon garden, damaged some tomatoes in main garden
June 22nd – last time to pick peas
June 27th – Harvested first potatoes (6 families)
– some were small; probably should have waited a little longer
June 27th – planted cantaloupe and pumpkins
June 27th and 28th – planted second
crop of onions; sprayed tomatoes for aphids
June 25 – ripped out lots of peas (they produced a LOT this
year); drying heirloom peas (Golden Sweet Snow Peas and Sugar Ann snap peas)
Last week of June – turnips were ready for harvesting
Last week of June – Transplanted dill
June 28th – beans only a few weeks from harvest;
starting to flower now
July 5th – picked apricots (at Bekkah’s)
July 7th – turnip picked but not bulbous (per
Sister Pack), but also she picked potatoes and onions
July 2nd (week of) – beginning of scheduled bean
harvests
July 25th – picked beans and later that night,
bottled about 35 pints
August 6th – watermelon harvested
August 8th – first corn harvest
August 9th – harvest of watermelon (9)
August 16th – harvest of watermelon (20)
August 23rd – another harvest of watermelon
September 8th – last corn harvest (7 different
harvest dates: 8/8, 8/10, 8/17, 8/22, 8/29, 9/1, and 9/8)
September 13th – lots of cantaloupe harvested!
October 2nd – canned tomatoes
October 11th – garden pull out
October 12th – planted strawberries in garden and
bottled grape juice; Kim still had 12 boxes of green tomatoes in her garage
October 22nd – drained sprinklers ahead of
pending freeze
